The NaVualiku initiative, referred to as the ‘Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu,’ celebrated the opening of its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday. Situated in the JKS Building, the launch was officiated by Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, who oversees the programme.
Gavoka emphasized that this office signifies more than just a new space; it represents the project’s commitment to making a significant impact, developing strategies, mobilizing resources, and establishing a foundation for sustainable growth. He highlighted that the ministry aims not only to increase tourist arrivals in Vanua Levu but also to improve the lives of local residents. “The office will be crucial in ensuring that the benefits of the NaVualiku programme reach every community on this island,” he noted.
In a related announcement, World Bank Group country manager for Fiji, Stefano Mocci, revealed that the project is backed by a US$200 million financing package from the World Bank. This initiative will be rolled out in three phases over the next decade using a multi-phase programmatic strategy.
Mocci stated that the World Bank, along with key partners and stakeholders, is dedicated to supporting the Fijian government in transforming Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism hub. This transformation aims to generate jobs, particularly for women and youth, attract local and international investments, and stimulate economic growth—all intended to enhance the quality of life for Fijians living in Vanua Levu.
He added, “Alongside financing, we are also contributing our global and regional expertise as part of our commitment to support the implementation of this project.” The new office is seen as vital for accelerating on-ground results, improving coordination, and fostering stronger partnerships in the Northern region. Mocci expressed pride in supporting Fiji’s development goals under the ‘Look North’ policy to enhance the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
