Fiji Landowners Stand Firm Against Controversial Hydro Dam Plans

Indigenous landowners in Namosi, a province on Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu, are voicing their opposition to the government’s proposal under Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to build a hydro dam. Local reports indicate that villagers from Navunikabi are urging the government to take into account the potential impacts of the project, which is planned to be located just one kilometer from their community, on both their environment and way of life.

The villagers are adamant that they do not want the construction by Energy Fiji Limited, which is predominantly government-owned, to proceed. They are also refusing access to their land for the government to carry out feasibility studies for the project.

In response, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, stated that the coalition government remains supportive of the initiative, emphasizing that the views of the community would be considered. He acknowledged the traditional leadership within the indigenous community and highlighted the government’s commitment to respecting their hierarchy.

“We will consider what the people of Navunikabi say. We will not be forcing our way onto this,” Ditoka told reporters. He expressed hopes for a resolution through consensus to find a solution beneficial for all parties involved.

According to a report from the state broadcaster FBC News, the paramount chief of Namosi, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, hinted at potential relocation for the villagers if the project were to go ahead. This suggestion raised concerns among the local landowners.

Sipiriano Nariva, chair of the Namosi landowners’ non-government organization ‘Lomani Au Maroroi Au’, criticized the officials for disregarding the landowners’ concerns while making decisions regarding their land and resources. He expressed disbelief and disappointment at the minister’s comments, asserting that the landowners will not permit their voices to be overlooked and will stand firm to protect their future generations.
