The Fiji Labour Party has recently advocated for the establishment of a Commission of Experts to investigate the rising occurrences of corruption within both the public and private sectors in Fiji. This resolution was ratified during the party’s national council meeting held in Nadi yesterday.

The party’s resolution, which was shared on their social media platforms, emphasizes the urgent need for inquiry due to the inadequate state of oversight institutions and substantial public funds being lost to corrupt practices. The FLP has raised concerns regarding alleged improper practices in the awarding of government contracts, which include those involving statutory bodies, municipal councils, and government commercial enterprises.

The resolution further stipulates that an inquiry must not only examine current practices but also yield recommendations aimed at tightening laws to prevent corruption. It advocates for enhancing the institutional capacity and expertise of state agencies tasked with these responsibilities.

This call to action resonates with the broader context of ongoing discussions about governance and accountability in Fiji. Recently, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has been at the center of scrutiny due to allegations of interference from senior officials. Figures like former Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai have voiced their concerns, leading to calls for independent inquiries from various political leaders, emphasizing the importance of fairness, transparency, and integrity in governance.

As Fiji navigates these complex issues, it remains crucial for political parties and institutions to collaborate to strengthen the frameworks that govern ethical practices and uphold public trust. The collective mobilization for increased oversight reflects a hopeful commitment to combat corruption and promote a transparent future for the nation.
