The Fiji Labour Party has expressed strong opposition to Barbara Malimali taking on the role of head of FICAC while she is currently under investigation. In a recent statement, party leader and former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized that Malimali should resign as Commissioner of FICAC until the allegations of misconduct against her are thoroughly examined by independent authorities.

Chaudhry highlighted that Malimali is under arrest and is being questioned about her actions. He also raised concerns regarding the Attorney General, Graham Leung, claiming that their close relationship raises questions about the integrity of her potential appointment. Notably, in April 2024, Malimali, in her capacity as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, had recommended Leung to the COC as the new Supervisor of Elections, succeeding the acting Supervisor at that time, Ana Mataiciwa.

Chaudhry pointed out that Malimali’s situation is further complicated by her appearance in court as a lawyer for Jason Zong, who is facing bribery charges brought by FICAC.
