The Fiji Kulas women’s football team claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Solomon Islands in their opening match of the OFC Women’s Nations Cup held in Suva. Despite being filled with talented players, the Kulas struggled initially, perhaps showing signs of early tournament nerves.
Star midfielder Trina Davis was notably absent from the match, a significant loss for the team, which led to a lineup without several overseas-based players. Key athletes such as Cema Nasau, Koleta Likuculacula, Narieta Leba, and Adi Litia Bakaniceva featured prominently but could not find their rhythm early on. Fiji’s defense, including Caroline Qalivere, Filomone Racea, Maria Veronica, and Mereoni Tora, experienced issues, leading to an early goal for the Solomon Islands.
Despite creating opportunities, Fiji’s finishing lacked precision in the first half. A critical breakthrough came when captain Jotivini Tabua set up Narieta Leba to equalize just before halftime. However, a lapse in defense immediately after the break saw the Solomon Islands regain the lead, making the score 2-1 at halftime.
Fiji entered the second half with renewed vigor and a heightened sense of urgency. The introduction of Preeya Singh and Elesi Tabunase provided much-needed energy. Cema Nasau then scored twice, showcasing her skill and decisiveness, flipping the scoreline in favor of Fiji and securing a hard-fought 3-2 win. The Kulas’ defense tightened subsequently, as they held off the Solomon Islands from mounting a comeback despite receiving three yellow cards.
This match serves as a pivotal point for the Fiji Kulas, especially considering their recent performances, where they showcased resilience against stronger teams, like in their previous friendly against Papua New Guinea. With a strong showing in this match, Fiji is now positioned to build momentum in the tournament, fueled by optimism and support for women’s football in the region.
As they continue in the OFC Women’s Nations Cup, the Kulas can draw strength from their opening game experience and the encouragement from their local fans, signaling a hopeful outlook for the remainder of the tournament and their broader aspirations in women’s football.
