The Fiji Women’s National Team, also known as the Kulas, is diligently preparing for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 OFC Qualifiers, set to commence next week at Govind Park in Ba. Head coach Nicola Demaine has expressed her satisfaction with the team’s development in a relatively short time, highlighting the establishment of a solid identity and culture.

Demaine noted, “I’m happy with the progress that we’ve made so far in the training program. We’ve had a short time to get things going, but we’re developing our culture and how we want it to be.” She observed that the players are beginning to execute the tactics effectively on the field, which is a crucial aspect as they approach the tournament.

Recent training sessions have provided valuable insights into the players’ retention of skills and their readiness for the demands of tournament football. Demaine remarked on the importance of these sessions in assessing the players’ understanding, stating, “There’s lots of stuff we can still work on, but we’ve got the basics together to make sure we’re ready for the tournament.”

Fitness and speed have been prioritized in their training, with noticeable improvements already evident among the players. The incorporation of a sprint coach for speed training has contributed positively to the girls’ technique and performance. “We’ve definitely seen massive improvements in that,” Demaine added, underscoring the team’s commitment to enhancing their physical readiness.

Importantly, the squad is largely injury-free, which Demaine noted with relief: “No injury concerns at the moment. A few little things here and there that we’re taking care of, but nothing serious, thank goodness.”

As the Kulas prepare for competitive international matches leading up to the qualifiers, Demaine believes the timing is optimal for their final preparations. The upcoming fixtures include matches against New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, and Vanuatu, all crucial for the team’s confidence and readiness.

This positive momentum and dedication from the Kulas reflect their commitment to achieving success in the qualifiers, as they aspire to make a significant impact in women’s football on the international stage. With the right preparation and a strong team spirit, the Kulas are poised for an exciting tournament ahead.
