With all of their international stars finally united, the Fiji Kulas women’s football team is gearing up for the OFC Women’s Nations Cup with hopes of qualifying for the historic FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil in 2027. This competition is crucial as it will determine the teams eligible for World Cup qualification.
Head coach Angeline Chua expressed optimism about their chances, stating that the addition of experienced players, including striker Trina Davis from the United States and players from New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, has significantly boosted the team’s morale and performance. She noted, “These international players bring a lot of experience and confidence to the group.”
The Kulas have been intensively preparing, having played vital friendly matches that included a 3-1 victory against Papua New Guinea and a close loss to the Māori team. Chua emphasized that these games were essential for honing their skills ahead of the tournament, which kicks off on July 5, 2025.
Fiji will face tough opponents in Group A, including the Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu, with their first match set against the Solomon Islands in Suva. The team, buoyed by strong home support and the integration of both local and overseas talent, is determined to advance into the semi-finals.
Historically, the Fiji Kulas reached the finals of the 2022 Nations Cup and made significant progress in the recent Olympic qualifiers. Their past performances demonstrate their capacity to compete at a high level, making this a promising moment for women’s football in Fiji.
As they strive for success, the Kulas are not just chasing a trophy but also looking to inspire the next generation of female footballers in Fiji, contributing to the broader advancement of women’s athletics in the Oceania region. With continued dedication and unity, the team is hopeful that they can make history on home soil during this upcoming tournament.
