The Fiji women’s football team, known as the Kulas, is gearing up for the OFC Women’s Nations Cup, which will run from July 4 to July 19, 2025. Their preparation has included international friendlies against the Māori women’s national team and Papua New Guinea, held in Port Moresby, highlighting their commitment to refining their skills ahead of the crucial tournament.
Head coach Angeline Chua expressed that these matches are instrumental in the team’s growth and preparation, particularly as they aim for a spot in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The tournament serves as an essential qualifier, providing the winner of the Oceania qualifiers direct entry to the World Cup, while the runner-up will face further playoff opportunities.
Chua noted the positive influence of recent performances, including their journey to the finals of the 2022 Women’s Nations Cup where they finished as runners-up after a thrilling 2-1 loss to Papua New Guinea. Additionally, the team reached the semi-finals of the 2024 OFC Women’s Olympic Qualifiers, showcasing their competitive spirit on the regional stage.
Entering this year’s competition, Fiji has drawn Group A, where they will compete against the Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu. Chua has instilled a determined mindset within her squad: “We’re going to take it one game at a time, and we’ll try our best to top the group and then go into the semi-finals.”
Bolstered by both local and overseas talents, including fan-favorite Trina Davis from the U.S. and the returning star striker Cema Nasau from New Zealand, the Kulas are looking to harness their diverse skills to elevate their play. This infusion of talent not only strengthens their chances in the tournament but also serves to inspire young female footballers in Fiji and the broader region.
The Fiji Kulas seek to make history this summer by claiming their first OFC title on home soil while continuing to foster the growth and recognition of women’s sports in the region. With their dedication and talented roster, they are poised for an exciting journey ahead.
