Assistant Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Sakiusa Tubuna, urged government planners and statisticians to adopt bold and collaborative approaches during the opening of the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics Planning Workshop. Addressing senior officials and staff from both the Ministry and the Fiji Bureau of Statistics, he highlighted the importance of the two-day workshop in aligning the Ministry’s efforts with the nation’s long-term goals.

Tubuna emphasized the necessity of effective planning in navigating an increasingly complex environment—corporately, technologically, and politically. He asserted that thorough planning enhances the ability to anticipate challenges, optimize resource allocation, and adapt to changes. Planning not only facilitates clarity and establishes a shared vision among departments but also maximizes efficiency by unifying efforts towards common goals, eliminating confusion, and providing a robust framework for informed decision-making.

Moreover, Tubuna pointed out that strategic planning streamlines processes, reduces duplication of efforts, and directs resources to areas with the most significant potential impact. He identified risk management as another critical advantage of strong planning, highlighting its role in proactively identifying potential risks and preparing contingency plans.

The Assistant Minister also reminded the attendees of their responsibility to deliver on five key priorities established over the next five years as part of the national development plans, many of which they had a hand in designing. He encouraged viewing these priorities as crucial contributions to improving government services and promoting national progress.

In a call for adaptability, Tubuna acknowledged the inevitability of change and stressed the importance of fostering an agile workforce capable of pivoting in response to new opportunities and threats while maintaining focus on achieving results. He inspired participants to engage wholeheartedly in workshop discussions, reinforcing that the future wellbeing and development of the country depend on their dedication.

Concluding his address, Tubuna officially opened the planning workshop, wishing the participants success as they work collaboratively to define the Ministry’s strategic direction over the next five years. This workshop represents a significant step towards ensuring that government efforts are effectively aligned with Fiji’s ambitions for progress and development.
