Farmers in Fiji’s Northern Division are advocating for increased support for people living with disabilities as part of the upcoming Fiji Kava Policy. This appeal was made during a public consultation held at the Labasa Market, where many stakeholders expressed their support for the policy’s objective of enhancing participation in the kava value chain by 30 percent. The initiative specifically targets youth, women, individuals with disabilities, and those residing in remote areas.

Marica Namalua, a farmer, highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and local farmers to bolster the kava industry in the region. She emphasized that financial support for individuals with disabilities is essential for enabling them to meet the quality standards set forth by the proposed policy.

“If the government funds the needs of those people living with disabilities, we as villagers and women will support that requirement to be among the best farmers supplying quality kava as outlined in this proposed policy,” Namalua stated.

Additionally, farmer Waisake Buisika spoke about the ongoing challenges faced by kava growers and vendors. He stressed the need for concrete support measures, including better pricing, improved market access, and help with maintaining product quality.

Kava consultant Losalini Leweniqila responded to these concerns, noting that the government’s five-year vision aims for inclusive growth throughout the kava value chain, benefiting everyone from farmers and middlemen to exporters and consumers.

Consultations regarding the proposed Kava Bill will continue this week in Macuata, with farmers being urged to engage actively before the legislation is finalized. The ongoing discussions highlight a collective commitment to enhance the kava industry while ensuring inclusivity for all members of the community, particularly those with disabilities. This approach not only aims to uplift the livelihoods of disadvantaged groups but also strengthens the overall kava sector, promising a brighter future for farmers across the region.
