Members of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) were reportedly taken aback when the position for the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner was made public last week through an advertisement. Sources close to the JSC revealed that many members were unaware of this development until they were approached for comments, suggesting a lack of communication within the commission.
The advertisement of the post has raised concerns regarding the internal processes of the JSC, particularly since the matter was not discussed in prior meetings. This has prompted members to question why such a significant issue was not tabled or disclosed earlier.
In response to the unexpected announcement, JSC members are planning to convene this week. They aim to seek an explanation for the oversight and discuss how the decision to advertise the role was made without prior consultation. Currently, Lavi Rokoika is serving as the acting Commissioner, stepping in after the removal of Barbara Malimali, who was dismissed following the findings of a Commission of Inquiry into her appointment. Before Malimali, Francis Puleiwai had been the Deputy Commissioner and was involved in the investigation surrounding her appointment.
This unexpected turn of events within the JSC could lead to important changes in the oversight of corruption in Fiji, as the process of appointing a new commissioner will be under close examination. The commission’s commitment to transparency and consultation in such significant matters is crucial for maintaining public trust.
