Fiji Journalists Targeted as Courtroom Security Comes Under Scrutiny

The Fijian Media Association (FMA) has raised urgent concerns regarding the safety of journalists following a violent incident involving an FBC reporter outside a Suva courtroom. Journalist Apenisa Waqairadovu was attacked by Sairusi Cinaturaga, a convicted murderer, shortly after Cinaturaga was found guilty for the murder of his partner’s one-year-old child. Despite being in handcuffs, Cinaturaga was able to pursue Waqairadovu, issuing threats and eventually forcing him down a staircase, highlighting a troubling lapse in courtroom security as a police officer present failed to intervene.

The FMA characterized this event as part of an ongoing issue, emphasizing a disturbing pattern of insufficient police protection for journalists covering court proceedings. They pointed out that similar threats have become increasingly common, referencing a previous incident in August involving another convicted murderer, Tevita Kapawale, who targeted journalists outside the courthouse.

In a statement, the FMA expressed serious concerns, stating, “This has been happening too often, and we do not see any improved process despite our repeated calls for stronger security and protection.” The association insists that journalists are crucial for maintaining transparency and accountability in Fiji’s justice system, and that they must operate safely and without intimidation.

The FMA is urging police authorities to take immediate action by implementing robust security measures, which include establishing secure perimeters for prisoner transport, increasing police presence around court exits, and ensuring proper supervision of offenders in public areas. The association firmly declared, “The safety of journalists is non-negotiable. The police must do better.”

Furthermore, the FMA encouraged the public to acknowledge the vital role journalists play in documenting the administration of justice in Fiji and reiterated the importance of bolstering security operations at courthouses to prevent future attacks. There is hope that with heightened awareness and responsive actions from law enforcement, the safety and work environment for journalists can improve significantly.
