Two journalists have received subpoenas to present oral evidence in a High Court case initiated by former deputy prime ministers Biman Prasad and Manoa Kamikamica. The two politicians are seeking to permanently stop their criminal proceedings. The journalists summoned are Jake Wise from The Fiji Times and Lavenia Lativereta of Mai TV.
Prof. Prasad is facing serious allegations, including a single count of failing to meet statutory disclosure requirements, which he is accused of committing back in 2015. Additionally, he faces charges for allegedly providing false information in a statutory declaration, specifically for omitting a directorship.
The hearing for this matter has been postponed until March 18. On the other hand, Mr. Kamikamica is confronted with a perjury charge, accused of knowingly making a false statement under oath regarding his involvement in an appointment.
This legal case highlights the complex interplay between political accountability and journalistic inquiry, underscoring the important role of media in reporting on public figures. As such proceedings unfold, the public remains attentive to the implications of this case within Fiji’s political landscape.
