Former Fijian journalist and author Charlie Charters has been brought to Suva, as confirmed by multiple reliable sources to FBC News. Charters was initially held in custody by a border agent at Nadi International Airport. However, the investigation and custody have since transitioned to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

FBC News has learned that Charters is not being held at either the Nadi or Namaka Police Stations. Reports indicate that he was detained at immigration earlier today. Charters was in Fiji to renew his Fijian passport and had plans to travel to Sydney later the same day.

Known for his extensive writings on alleged connections between FICAC and the Fiji Sports Council, Charters has utilized publicly available documents and whistleblower accounts to support his claims. As he remains in detention, questions posed to FICAC regarding the circumstances of Charters’ detention have yet to receive a response.

The situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding transparency and accountability in the governance of Fijian institutions. A clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding his detention could prove essential for those following the integrity of public institutions in Fiji. This case also brings to light the complexities involved when journalists investigate matters of national interest.
