Fiji Joins UN-Backed Push to Tighten Arms Controls Under Melanesian Arms Trade Treaty Initiative

The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific is set to assist Fiji in enhancing its national arms control measures. This new partnership was approved by the Fijian Cabinet recently.

The collaboration will facilitate the execution of the project titled “Enhancing Fiji’s Arms Control System and Supporting Melanesian Arms Trade Treaty Implementation.” This initiative aims to bolster inter-agency coordination and provide more effective oversight of arms-related activities within Fiji.

Backed by the Arms Trade Treaty Voluntary Trust Fund, the project boasts a total budget of $199,800. Its broader goals include fostering increased Melanesian participation in the Arms Trade Treaty, thus promoting regional stability and establishing responsible arms transfer standards.

Moreover, the project will aid Fiji in fulfilling its international obligations while simultaneously developing stronger and safer frameworks for monitoring and regulating arms movement within the country. This initiative not only represents a significant step towards improved arms control in Fiji but also underscores the nation’s commitment to contributing positively to regional security and cooperation.
