Fiji is actively participating in the 23rd Pacific Maritime Boundaries Working Session, currently taking place in Sydney, Australia, from December 1 to 9, 2025. The delegation representing Fiji comprises officials from various government sectors, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, the Solicitor-General’s Office, and the Republic of Fiji Navy.
The Pacific Island Countries and Territories collectively manage a vast maritime area, accounting for 30 percent of the world’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and encompassing 48 maritime boundaries. Significantly, there are still 12 of these boundaries that remain under negotiation, underscoring the necessity for ongoing technical and diplomatic collaboration among the nations.
The Pacific Maritime Boundaries Programme (PMBP), spearheaded by the Pacific Community (SPC), is pivotal in assisting countries across the region in securing and formalizing their maritime rights and responsibilities in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This collaboration is vital not only for regional security and sustainability but also for the economic development of these island nations, demonstrating their commitment to safeguarding their ocean resources.
