Acting Commissioner of Corrections Auta Moceisuva recently attended the inauguration of the Hong Kong International Correctional Services Response Tactics Training Academy. This significant engagement signifies a major step in establishing a formal pathway for the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) officers to receive specialized training in Hong Kong.

The collaboration between FCS and the Hong Kong Correctional Services aims to enhance the operational capacity of corrections officers by providing strategic engagement and advanced tactical response training. The opening ceremony witnessed participation from representatives of eight countries across the Asia-Pacific region, including Fiji.

The training program is meticulously designed to improve officers’ practical skills and theoretical knowledge in tactical operational response techniques. It offers both local and international participants an opportunity to train in environments that closely resemble real-world operational scenarios.

The academy’s first cohort comprises 29 officers from several nations, including Mainland China, Macau, Brunei, Fiji, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, and Vietnam, who have begun their training in the Certificate in Safe and Effective Control Tactics course. Among them, four FCS officers are currently undergoing training at this state-of-the-art facility.

Upon completion of their training, these officers will play a pivotal role as the core instructional group responsible for creating and implementing emergency response and tactical training programs within FCS. They are selected from the Emergency Control Unit and the Training Academy located in Naboro.

During his visit, Commissioner Moceisuva also engaged in discussions with the Commissioner of Hong Kong Correctional Services and other senior officials regarding potential collaborations aimed at further enhancing the operational efficiency and effectiveness of FCS. He emphasized that this partnership opens up avenues for improved training and professional development for staff through resource-sharing arrangements.

This collaborative effort is anticipated to effectively address existing gaps in FCS emergency response protocols by aligning them with international best practices, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing safety and operational readiness within the corrections system. Overall, this initiative reflects a proactive approach toward professional development and the integration of global standards in correctional services.
