Fiji has made significant strides in tax transparency and international cooperation by signing the Multilateral Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters, becoming the 152nd jurisdiction to do so. The agreement was formalized by Esrom Immanuel, Fiji’s Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development, during a ceremony held in Paris on Thursday. This signing is viewed by the Fijian government as a pivotal move aimed at combating tax evasion and boosting the nation’s reputation on the global stage.

The Multilateral Convention serves as the most comprehensive framework for international tax collaboration, enabling countries to share tax information automatically and upon request, conduct joint audits, and assist in transnational tax recovery efforts. Minister Immanuel emphasized that Fiji’s participation in the convention will bolster its relationships with countries around the world and foster greater trust in the nation’s financial and regulatory frameworks.

Upon the completion of domestic procedures, the agreement will empower Fiji with a unified legal structure to exchange tax information with 151 other jurisdictions, including significant global financial centers. Udit Singh, the Chief Executive Officer of the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, remarked that this convention establishes the legal groundwork necessary for enacting the Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information and responding to information requests.

Singh further highlighted that these initiatives will effectively combat tax evasion and avoidance, enhance compliance among taxpayers, and ultimately lead to a rise in government revenue. He assured that the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service will continue to collaborate closely with international partners to align with global standards, pointing out that this agreement is a crucial step toward removing Fiji from the EU blacklist.

Overall, these developments indicate Fiji’s commitment to enhancing tax compliance and improving its international standing, fostering a more transparent and accountable fiscal environment.
