Fiji is intensifying its efforts against the illicit drug trade by also addressing the false narratives that undermine public trust in law enforcement. This initiative was highlighted by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), during a joint meeting with the Fiji Police Force aimed at enhancing collaboration in the fight against drug crimes.

The meeting served as a platform to discuss cooperative strategies against drug trafficking, tackle unfounded allegations against police officers, and reinforce the partnership between the military and police in effectively combatting this growing issue. Maj-Gen Kalouniwai emphasized that the battle has expanded beyond just drugs to include the war on misinformation. He pointed out that certain individuals are spreading misleading information, adversely affecting the public’s perception of the Fiji Police Force and the nation as a whole.

In a reassuring statement, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu addressed concerns regarding the drug situation in Fiji, asserting that it remains manageable. He provided the RFMF delegation with an overview of law enforcement activities from 2022 to 2025, detailing significant drug seizures, arrests, and ongoing investigations pertaining to both white and green drugs. The briefing also touched on measures taken to prevent police involvement in illegal drug activities.

Maj-Gen Kalouniwai acknowledged that while disciplinary measures might be necessary for any officers found engaged in misconduct, it is essential that such actions comply with the rule of law. He reiterated the importance of a comprehensive approach to tackle both internal and external challenges in disrupting the illicit drug trade.

Looking ahead, another coordination meeting is set to take place this week, focusing on planning joint operations to further strengthen the collaboration between the police and military in combating the drug trade across Fiji. This proactive approach is not only aimed at ensuring the safety of the public but also at restoring confidence in law enforcement amidst the challenges posed by misinformation.
