Fiji Joins Forces to Combat Scammers: A Global Initiative Unfolds

Efforts to combat scams require a united front, as emphasized by Fiji’s Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, SMEs, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, during the National Scam Awareness Week in Suva. Mr. Kamikamica noted that this awareness initiative marks a significant step in the fight against fraud, with backing from Australia, New Zealand, and the European Union (EU).

In conjunction with the National Scam Awareness Week, newly launched initiatives by the UN, Pacific Digital Economy Programme, Australia, New Zealand, and the EU were highlighted. Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for Trade, Cooperatives, SMEs, and Communications, underlined the necessity of international cooperation to enhance Fiji’s digital resilience.

“The invaluable support from Australia, New Zealand, and the European Union during National Scam Awareness Week has been crucial in spreading awareness and developing strategies to boost Fiji’s digital defenses,” Mr. Ali stated. He noted that the ongoing partnership with UNCDF’s Pacific Digital Economy Programme reflects the significance of this support.

The EU’s role in strengthening Fiji’s digital and financial capabilities was also a key topic during the opening session. Mr. Pedro Velazquez, head of the Section for Civil Society, Gender, Human Rights, and Health, emphasized the EU’s commitment to increasing digital resilience across the Pacific. He stated that their aim is to enhance digital and financial capacities at various levels, including community, industry, and policy.

“The European Union’s collaboration with Australia and New Zealand through UNCDF showcases our commitment to Fiji. This is also why we are proud supporters of the inaugural National Scam Awareness Week,” Mr. Velazquez added.
