The Ministry of Fisheries and Forests (MoFF) in Fiji, alongside the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has officially established a partnership through the signing of a Record of Discussions aimed at advancing the Coastal Blue Economy Promotion Project in Pacific Island Countries. The agreement was finalized by Saimone Tauvoli, Acting Permanent Secretary for Fisheries and Forests, and Yumi Kimura, JICA Fiji Representative.

This Record of Discussions not only sets the groundwork for the project’s implementation but also builds upon diplomatic agreements established between Fiji and Japan in August 2025. Under this partnership, the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests will take the lead in implementing the project, collaborating closely with JICA and other key stakeholders to ensure effectiveness and efficiency in delivery.

The primary goal of the Coastal Blue Economy Promotion Project is to enhance the sustainable utilization of coastal resources, foster the blue economy, and support long-term social and economic growth in Fiji and throughout the region. Through these initiatives, the project seeks to create a more resilient and sustainable environmental framework, ultimately benefiting local communities and enhancing regional cooperation. This partnership represents a significant step forward in promoting sustainable coastal management and economic development in the Pacific Islands.
