The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) is calling on the public to adhere to strict biosecurity protocols in order to prevent the entry of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) into Fiji. This warning comes in response to the increasing global threat posed by HPAI, which significantly impacts both poultry and wild bird populations and presents potential health risks to humans.

The virus can be transmitted through various means, including contaminated birds, eggs, feathers, feed, and equipment. Recently, New Zealand confirmed its first case of HPAI, raising concerns about its spread across the region.

In its announcement, BAF stated that no live poultry, birds, or unprocessed bird products such as eggs, meat, or feathers may be imported into Fiji without prior approval. Imports must meet stringent biosecurity requirements and include valid health certificates.

Travelers are also reminded to declare any poultry-related items, including clothing, footwear, or equipment that may have been in contact with birds. Effective immediately, unprocessed poultry products, including frozen or cured poultry meat and fresh or cured poultry eggs, are banned from personal importation into Fiji. Additionally, processed poultry products that are not shelf-stable, like sausages and cooked chicken, are also prohibited.

However, BAF noted that processed, retorted products that are shelf-stable and contain poultry as an ingredient may be imported under personal allowances.

This proactive approach by BAF not only aims to protect Fiji’s local bird populations and public health but also underscores the importance of teamwork between the government and the community. By remaining vigilant and compliant with these measures, we can collectively safeguard our environment and public health from potential threats.

Overall, this initiative highlights Fiji’s commitment to maintaining its biosecurity and protecting its natural resources, fostering a hopeful outlook for the country’s wildlife and agriculture sustainability.
