The Ministry of Health and Medical Services in Fiji has issued a warning to the public to avoid entering the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park and swimming in its pools until further notice due to recent cases of leptospirosis. This warning comes after a confirmed death attributed to the disease and two additional suspected cases currently under investigation at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

Health officials have indicated that heavy rainfall in the area may have led to the contamination of local rivers and pool waters, thereby increasing the risk of infection among those who come into contact with these water sources. The Ministry is strongly advising residents and visitors alike to remain vigilant for symptoms associated with leptospirosis, which can include fever, headache, muscle pain, red eyes, vomiting, and jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or skin).

The Ministry encourages those experiencing any symptoms to seek immediate screening and treatment at nearby health facilities, emphasizing that prompt medical attention can be crucial in saving lives. This situation highlights the importance of public health awareness and the need for caution in natural environments following adverse weather conditions. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, the community can help mitigate the spread of this illness.
