A flash flood alert has been issued for northern and eastern Viti Levu, specifically targeting areas from Ba to Korovou, including Nalawa in Ra, and Naitasiri along with its interior. The alert is also applicable to the Northern Division of the country.
The situation has arisen due to a trough of low pressure that is leading to significant cloud cover and continuous rainfall, which heightens the risk of flash flooding in these regions. The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported that isolated heavy rainfall could result in flooding, particularly affecting drainage systems, small streams, low-water bridges, Irish crossings, roads, and properties located in low-lying areas.
In addition to the flood alert, tide information has been provided for today, noting that Lautoka will experience high tide at 6:20 AM and low tide at 12:01 PM, while Suva will have high tide at 6:46 AM and low tide at 12:28 PM.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to remain alert and to avoid traversing flooded crossings. It’s essential that they pay close attention to warnings issued by the Fiji Meteorological Service and local disaster authorities to stay safe during this period of adverse weather. The vigilance of the community can significantly contribute to minimizing potential hazards associated with the predicted weather events.
