The Fijian Ministry of Policing, in partnership with the Office of the Solicitor General and the Fiji Police Force, is inviting the public to participate in the review of the Police Act of 1965. This initiative, which aims to modernize policing legislation, will take place from August 11 to September 2, 2025, across various locations in the country.
Public consultations will be hosted in town and village halls, as well as community centers throughout Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Citizens and organizations are encouraged to submit their feedback, which can also be provided online before the September deadline.
Minister for Policing, Iowane Navailurua, emphasized that this is a crucial opportunity for all Fijians to voice their perspectives on how the Police Act can be revised to better serve the community today and prepare for future challenges. The aim is to ensure that the legislation reflects current policing needs and aligns with community expectations.
This review process reflects ongoing efforts to update the policing framework in Fiji, which has been prompted by discussions around modernizing police practices and improving community relations. Similar initiatives have included consultations on various aspects of police structure and training to enhance accountability, effectiveness, and responsiveness to evolving crime trends.
The emphasis on public involvement showcases a commitment to fostering transparency and collaboration between law enforcement and communities. As modern crime increasingly complexifies, engaging citizens in shaping policing laws is not only necessary but hopeful for building trust and enhancing public safety across Fiji.
Overall, this initiative represents a significant step towards creating a more accountable and effective police force, ultimately benefiting all citizens of Fiji.
