The Fiji Police Force is currently looking into a troubling situation involving crew members from a foreign airline who were reportedly robbed and sexually assaulted at a nightclub in Nadi during the early hours yesterday. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, addressed the incidents, expressing concern for the victims and emphasizing that these events are unfortunate.

Gavoka elaborated that the incidents stemmed from two separate occurrences: one involving alleged theft and the other sexual assault, each affecting different crew members. He noted that a police suspect related to the sexual assault has already been questioned regarding the matter.

Furthermore, he clarified misinformation circulated by various international media suggesting that the crew members were ‘detained.’ Gavoka assured that they are in good health and staying at a local hotel designated for crew layovers. The airline’s headquarters has advised the crew to remain within the hotel vicinity to facilitate police investigations, with plans for them to return home later this week.

Gavoka urged international media to report responsibly, avoiding sensationalism and ensuring accuracy in coverage. He acknowledged that, regrettably, incidents like these can happen anywhere, reinforcing that Fiji is not immune to such occurrences. He concluded with a reminder for tourists to exercise caution in nightlife settings and during late hours.

In light of this situation, it is vital for the community and tourists alike to prioritize safety and awareness, fostering a supportive environment for victims while ensuring the well-being of those who visit Fiji. Despite this incident, Fiji continues to be a popular destination known for its hospitality and warmth, demonstrating resilience in the face of challenges.
