Rochdale Hornets, a team in League 1, have announced the signing of Fijian prop Joe Taira, marking his return for a third time to the Crown Oil Arena. The 35-year-old began his professional journey with the Hornets in 2016 and has already played 104 matches in total for the club.
Taira’s career at Rochdale began with 70 appearances from 2016 to 2018 before he spent two seasons at Batley Bulldogs. He returned to Rochdale in 2021, during which he added another 34 games to his record. After a brief period with community club Rochdale Mayfield, Taira has signed a one-year contract for the 2025 season.
Though he did not earn an official cap, Taira made an appearance for the Fiji national team in a World Cup warm-up match against England in October 2022, which he views as a valuable experience.
Reflecting on his return, Taira expressed his excitement: “I’m buzzing to be back at the place I started my professional career, and I find it fitting that it’s where I will end it. The boys were unlucky last season but showed some really promising signs, and I believe I can help them to make the next step. Coming towards the end of my career, I just want to prove my worth one more time, get stuck into pre-season training and go from there.”
Last season, the Hornets finished third in League 1 but were eliminated from the playoffs at home by Hunslet, the eventual league winners who secured promotion.
Hornets head coach Gary Thornton expressed his satisfaction with Taira’s return, emphasizing his familiarity with the club and the substantial impact he can have on the team. “His uncompromising style in attack and defense will be a big benefit for us next year,” Thornton stated. He noted Taira’s popularity and respect within the squad as a major asset for the upcoming season.
In summary, Joe Taira’s return to Rochdale Hornets not only marks a significant moment for him personally as he concludes his playing career where he began but also brings a wealth of experience and talent to a team looking to build on last season’s progress. This signing could catalyze the Hornets’ ambitions for a successful season ahead. Fans can look forward to an exciting 2025 campaign with Taira’s leadership on the field.
