The Norwegian Sun, the sole cruise ship visiting Suva this month, was intercepted by the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) for carrying illicit substances. The ship, flagged in the Bahamas, arrived on September 6, with plans to continue to Savusavu. Acting on credible intelligence, customs officers conducted a targeted search of a passenger’s cabin, unveiling prohibited substances. The passenger was subsequently taken into police custody for further investigation and later charged and penalized by the court.

FRCS Chief Executive Udit Singh commended the enforcement team’s diligence, highlighting their role in protecting Fiji’s borders and upholding the integrity of customs operations. Singh expressed a firm stance against illegal activities, urging travelers to adhere to Fiji’s laws and respect the regulations designed to ensure community safety.

This incident is part of a broader, ongoing effort by the FRCS to safeguard Fiji’s borders from smuggling and illegal activities. Previously, similar operations have succeeded in intercepting attempts to smuggle methamphetamine and undeclared ammunition. These efforts utilize targeted risk assessments and inter-agency collaborations, crucial in maintaining a secure environment amid evolving drug smuggling tactics.

The Norwegian Sun boasts a guest capacity of 1,878 and a crew complement of 906, operating under Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). This isn’t the first time NCL has faced such issues; last year, another of their ships, Norwegian Joy, saw two passengers arrested for drug possession.

As these challenges persist, the FRCS reminds visitors of the severe penalties associated with illicit substance possession and trafficking. The continued vigilance and collaboration between enforcement agencies are vital in creating a safer environment for both Fijian citizens and visitors. Such proactive measures underscore Fiji’s commitment to curbing illegal activities and safeguarding its communities.
