Two inmates at a Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) facility have commenced a hunger strike, starting on Friday, September 20, 2024. FCS confirmed in a statement that the inmates, who were previously employed in the facility’s kitchen, began this protest after being temporarily removed from their kitchen roles due to a dispute related to food supply management, which prompted an internal investigation.
The inmates are demanding to be reinstated to their former positions, expressing their dissatisfaction with the decision. Despite numerous counseling sessions conducted by senior officers, healthcare providers, and other support staff, the hunger strike continues.
Efforts are also being made to involve spiritual leaders from their faith communities to offer guidance and support. The Fiji Corrections Service has assured the public that the health and well-being of the inmates is a priority.
“The individuals are being closely monitored by medical staff, and all necessary precautions are in place to protect their well-being during this period,” the statement noted.
The Minister for Justice and the Human Rights Commission have been informed about the situation regarding the hunger strike. The FCS reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all inmates while addressing grievances through proper internal channels.
“We are actively working to resolve the matter and will provide further updates as necessary,” the statement concluded.
