The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has reported an incident involving Edwin Nand, a murder convict, who was attacked by another inmate while in custody. The FCS firmly denied accusations made by Nand’s lawyer, Sunil Gosai, suggesting that prison officers were responsible for the assault.

The FCS clarified that the altercation stemmed from personal differences between inmates, resulting in Nand sustaining lacerations during the incident. The FCS Medics Unit promptly treated Nand for his injuries.

In light of these events, the FCS has advised Gosai to ensure he reports verified information, rather than relying on a single perspective regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This incident adds to the ongoing dialogue about safety within correctional facilities in Fiji. Similar past occurrences have raised concerns regarding inmate treatment and the use of force. In particular, past reports have noted that the FCS has taken steps to address safety while maintaining humane treatment of inmates. The organization emphasizes its commitment to transparency and accountability, assuring the public that any internal reviews regarding staff conduct will be handled with seriousness and integrity.

While the incident with Nand is concerning, it highlights the importance of effective communication and due process within the correctional system. It reflects an ongoing commitment to providing a secure environment, which is vital for the rehabilitation and safety of all individuals in custody.
