Fiji, Indonesia, and Australia: Shaping Future Cooperation for Resilience

The draft memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation between Fiji and Indonesia, initiated in 2022, is currently under review. Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, informed Parliament last week that the review aims to incorporate new strategic objectives that have arisen from the trilateral initiative involving Fiji, Indonesia, and Australia.

Mr. Ditoka described the trilateral cooperation as a forward-looking initiative that establishes a strong foundation for Fiji to enhance its disaster risk management capabilities while also aiding regional resilience efforts. He expressed gratitude to the governments of Indonesia and Australia for their ongoing support and collaboration.

He highlighted that the insights gained from their mission to Indonesia have been invaluable and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to applying these lessons for the benefit of the Fijian people. He added that the government will continue to refine and prioritize the trilateral initiative in the coming months, striving to ensure it yields significant long-term advantages for Fiji and the broader Pacific region.

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu emphasized the importance of political will and commitment in enhancing resilience and preparedness, allowing the government to respond effectively in emergencies. He remarked that the changing nature of life necessitates a transformation in development approaches.

Mr. Seruiratu stressed that partnerships are crucial for preparing adequately for future disasters and called for a reassessment of the MOUs. He urged a focus on how to apply the lessons learned from Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand within Fiji.
