Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has raised concerns about a pressing crisis affecting Fijian communities, characterized by the overconsumption of yaqona, rising drug abuse, unsafe practices fueling HIV transmission, and non-communicable diseases that threaten public health and social stability. He warns that these issues are detrimental to productivity, contributing to increasing poverty levels and diminishing respect for authority.
In addressing this multifaceted crisis, Seruiratu emphasized the importance of involving traditional leaders in national development initiatives. He believes that these leaders, being closely connected to their communities, can effectively facilitate government programs that are culturally appropriate and sustainable. Their participation is also vital in resolving conflicts within the community.
Seruiratu pointed to the tragic murder of Constable Peniasi Racagi as a stark indication of escalating crime rates, asserting that simply increasing police presence will not adequately address these challenges. He advocates for a transformation of communities through educational institutions, social organizations, and grassroots initiatives that foster civic responsibility and respect.
Highlighting the urgency of the health crisis, Seruiratu noted a troubling increase in new HIV infections, with 1,583 cases reported in 2024 alone—three times the figure from the previous year. The first half of 2023 recorded 1,226 new infections, primarily due to risky drug practices like needle sharing. Additionally, he pointed out that non-communicable diseases continue to be the leading cause of death, affecting 98.5 percent of adults, with at least one major risk factor.
Seruiratu is calling for a comprehensive, nationwide response that brings together government entities, religious organizations, and traditional leaders to implement preventive and remedial strategies aimed at safeguarding families, enhancing public safety, and boosting productivity within Fijian society. His call for unity and collaboration reflects a hopeful outlook towards addressing these critical issues and improving the overall well-being of the community.
