Fiji has officially implemented its annual seasonal fishing ban on Grouper (Kawakawa) and Coral Trout (Donu), which will be active from June 1 to September 30, 2025. The Ministry of Fisheries is calling on fishers, vendors, and exporters to strictly abide by this four-month restriction. This ban aims to protect these species during their peak breeding season, prohibiting the harvesting, selling, transporting, and possessing of these fish during this crucial time.

Introduced in 2019, the ban is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to mitigate overfishing and promote the sustainability of Fiji’s marine biodiversity. Both Kawakawa and Donu are known for gathering in large numbers during their breeding season, thus making them particularly susceptible to overfishing.

Officials from the Ministry believe that adhering to this ban is vital for boosting fish populations and enhancing future catch potential, which is essential for the livelihoods of local communities reliant on fishing. The Ministry also highlights the importance of community cooperation for the success of this initiative, emphasizing that public awareness programs will continue to reinforce compliance and community support.

Restaurant owners, market vendors, and the general public are encouraged to actively participate in this conservation effort by refraining from buying or selling the protected species during the ban. This collective responsibility is deemed crucial for sustaining marine resources, and the Ministry is optimistic that such efforts will foster a more prosperous and stable future for both the ocean environment and the communities intertwined with it.

This seasonal ban reflects a hopeful outlook towards sustainable fishing practices and strengthens the commitment to protecting Fiji’s rich marine biodiversity. By prioritizing the ecological health of these species, the initiative sets a positive precedent for future fisheries management.
