Fiji’s immigration authorities are currently addressing a pressing situation involving 8,391 foreign nationals who are overstaying their visas. Minister for Immigration Viliame Naupoto has noted that the majority of these individuals are business permit holders utilizing single-entry visas. He has stressed the importance of awareness regarding visa conditions among visitors, reiterating that failing to comply can trigger entry restrictions and other penalties.
Naupoto explained that overstayers are automatically flagged by the immigration system, leading to a prohibited immigrant status. Through this classification, individuals could face a ban from re-entering Fiji for a year or potentially for life in severe cases. However, the minister pointed out that overstayers have the opportunity to rectify their status by visiting immigration offices, where they can seek assistance in renewing or extending their permits in collaboration with their employers.
Assuring that there are no financial penalties for overstaying, Naupoto emphasized that the Ministry of Immigration is actively monitoring foreign nationals and enforcing compliance through integrated systems with embassies. This latest information comes in light of previous reports highlighting a drastic increase in illegal immigration numbers in Fiji, doubling from 4,709 to over 8,000 within the last year, according to Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua.
