The National Fire Authority (NFA) is gearing up for a significant expansion of its infrastructure to enhance fire safety across Fiji. Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa unveiled a range of key projects designed to improve fire safety support in critical regions.

A highlight of this initiative is the construction of new barracks for firefighters, which aims to improve their living conditions and lessen the need for long commutes from locations like Suva. Nalumisa emphasized that this step is part of an overarching effort to make NFA services more accessible to all citizens, regardless of their geographical location.

Additionally, the establishment of a new fire station in Matei, situated in the hotel district, is set to enhance fire safety measures for local hotels, accommodations, and the nearby Matei Airport. This project is in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Land Department.

The Lautoka Fire Station is also slated for major improvements, undergoing extensions and maintenance that will include new sleeping quarters for female firefighters, thereby improving operational efficiency. Work on this essential project is expected to kick off next month.

Earlier reports have underscored the pressing need for improved emergency services in areas like Natadola, where a new fire station is being developed due to a rise in fire incidents and road accidents. This initiative reflects a heightened awareness of the importance of enhancing emergency response capabilities, with the government allocating over $2.8 million for these advancements.

Moreover, a recent $400,000 upgrade of the Levuka Fire Station is part of broader efforts to strengthen fire safety measures in both historic and populated areas.

This expansive plan not only aims to bolster public safety but also to establish a well-equipped fire service capable of responding efficiently to emergencies and fostering safer communities throughout Fiji. With persistent government investment, there is hopeful anticipation for a future where fire safety initiatives reach even the most remote areas of the nation.
