The Ministry of Local Government and Housing is set to relocate approximately 400 families this financial year as part of an initiative aimed at addressing settlements that cannot be formalized, according to Minister Maciu Nalumisa. This relocation effort will specifically affect families in areas such as Vatuwaqa, Veidogo, the Nabua Muslim League area, and around 63 households in Kilikali.
The minister noted that green land has been identified for the new settlements, and the Ministry will collaborate with the Lands Department to secure this land from the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB). A budget allocation of $2.2 million has been designated for land acquisition and the preparation of these new sites, with ongoing discussions with private landlords regarding additional parcels of land.
Nalumisa emphasized that the ministry is also urging the Housing Authority to examine its financing policies, which would facilitate access for eligible families to purchase land. “I have instructed the Housing Authority to review their policy to better accommodate those who qualify,” he explained.
Looking forward, the ministry has laid out a strategic plan to develop or construct approximately 1,000 homes or serviced land parcels each year over the next five to six years. The demand for housing in the nation is significant, with estimates indicating it could reach between 6,000 to 7,000 units.
This initiative reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing living conditions and tackling housing issues faced by vulnerable communities. As the ministry works diligently to implement these plans, there is hope that many families will soon have access to secure and appropriate living arrangements, contributing positively to community welfare in Fiji.
