The Housing Authority made significant strides yesterday with the successful conduct of a barrel draw for 101 model homes in the Nepani Subdivision. This event marks the Authority’s return to home construction after more than three decades, showcasing its renewed commitment to providing affordable housing.
The draw took place at the Authority’s headquarters in Valelevu, attended by representatives from the Ministry of Housing & Local Government, the Fiji Police Force, and Housing Authority staff. The event highlights a growing emphasis on constructing affordable homes, supplementing the Authority’s traditional role in land development.
Isikeli Navuda, the chief executive of the Housing Authority, emphasized that the Nepani Model Homes project is just the beginning of various planned housing initiatives across the nation. The allocation of the 101 two-bedroom homes was conducted through a transparent process that included thorough screening, selection, and objection protocols to ensure fairness and accountability.
To make these homes accessible for low-income families, the Authority has invested $2.9 million to subsidize costs related to land and housing, alongside government support through the Housing Assistance Grant. Mr. Navuda reported a strong public interest in the project and announced plans to deliver as many as 400 additional homes by the year’s end, which will include both two- and three-bedroom units.
Additionally, Poasa Verevakabau, General Manager of Finance and Administration, noted that this milestone achieved by the Housing Authority reflects a united effort among its board, management, staff, and various stakeholders. Successful applicants can now look forward to the next steps, which involve the issuance of offer letters and the facilitation of housing grants as they move closer to securing their homes. This initiative not only promises to enhance the lives of many families but also signifies a hopeful revival in the housing sector in the region.
