A tragic fire at Levuka Settlement in Samabula North claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman yesterday afternoon, marking a somber moment as fire-related fatalities in Fiji this year reached 13.
The National Fire Authority (NFA) received an emergency call around 4 PM and promptly dispatched two fire trucks from the Suva Fire Station. Firefighters arrived shortly after and encountered a two-bedroom house, constructed of corrugated iron and timber, completely engulfed in flames.
During the firefighting efforts, crews were notified that someone was trapped inside the burning building. Despite their attempts to control the fire and access the interior, they ultimately discovered the young woman deceased within the property. The fire left approximately 95 percent of the house, measuring around 10 meters by 11 meters, severely damaged.
The property, owned by a 70-year-old woman, was rented by a 47-year-old barber. Unfortunately, the house lacked insurance. Acting NFA Chief Executive Officer Joel Israel expressed condolences, highlighting the tragic nature of the incident, especially amid the festive Christmas season.
Israel noted that firefighters utilized water relay systems and connected to a nearby hydrant due to the fire’s intensity. Witnesses reported scenes of panic as flames and dense smoke quickly consumed the structure, allowing little time for intervention.
NFA statistics reveal that, out of the 13 fire-related deaths this year, six were women and seven were men, comprising 12 adults and one child. As the holiday season approaches, the NFA has reiterated its call for heightened awareness of fire safety, emphasizing the increased risks during this bustling time of year.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire prevention and safety, urging communities to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their homes.
