Fiji Hotels Lead the Way in Diversity and Inclusion

The three hotels owned by the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), including InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, and Holiday Inn Suva, have officially acknowledged sexual diversity and inclusion in the workplace, making them the first hotels to openly advocate for this cause.

In recognition of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) during Pride Month in June, the hotels celebrated their commitment to creating an inclusive environment. They also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Trans Affirmative Action Guild (TAAG) to enhance understanding and support for gender diversity among employees. This initiative positions IHG as a leader in embracing transformative practices within Fiji’s hospitality industry, reinforcing its goal to be a preferred employer in the region.

Lachlan Walker, Portfolio General Manager of IHG Hotels & Resorts for FNPF Owned Hotels, emphasized the significance of fostering a welcoming workplace culture that values diverse backgrounds. He highlighted the efforts of a dedicated committee comprising colleagues from various levels aimed at promoting the inclusion agenda across their hotels.

The June celebrations aimed to elevate the visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community within the workplace and foster a mindset of inclusivity. Ratu Eroni Ledua Dina, co-founder and executive director of TAAG, expressed enthusiasm for partnering with IHG Hotels & Resorts, noting the collaboration’s potential to enhance advocacy and training efforts in Fiji’s hospitality sector.

To commemorate Pride Month, the DE&I Committee organized discussions about the importance of Pride and displayed the “Pride Flag” prominently at all three hotels. LGBTQIA+ Pride Month takes place every June to honor the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots and to support the LGBTQIA+ community.
