A landmark event unfolded earlier this week at the Pacific Specialist Healthcare Hospital (PSH) in Nadi, where the facility successfully conducted its first open-heart surgery, marking a significant achievement for the hospital. Kusum Lata, a 61-year-old resident of Natabua, underwent a delicate procedure known as Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), executed by a specialized team of Cardio Thoracic surgeons without any complications.
Lata, a mother of three, expressed her deep gratitude to the management and staff for the exceptional care she received. She recalled her initial experience when she faced severe chest pains and a minor heart attack in June, which led her family to seek surgical options. Swiftly, she was advised to prepare around $50,000 for a trip to India for the procedure. However, upon learning about the local capabilities of PSH, her family discovered they could have the surgery performed in Nadi at a fraction of the cost.
“The relief I feel is overwhelming; all my pains have vanished post-operation,” Lata said. She praised the hospital staff for their attentive care throughout her admission and expressed eagerness to reunite with her family soon.
Parvish Kumar, the founder and director of PSH, emphasized that the establishment of the cardiology department and the recent successful surgery were the results of extensive planning and 15 months of hard work. He noted the significance of the timing that allowed Lata to explore local options, thereby receiving treatment that typically would carry exorbitant costs overseas.
Kumar highlighted that while the operation could have cost the family around $50,000 in India, expenses in other countries could be even more considerable. He expressed joy for Lata and her family, remarking that this achievement offers hope and serves as a stepping stone for promoting Fiji as a viable health tourism destination. With plans to market the hospital’s advanced healthcare services at competitive prices, PSH aims to position Fiji as an attractive option for international medical travelers.
This development not only represents a triumph for the hospital and the patient but also signifies a hopeful shift in healthcare accessibility in the region. The establishment of cardiology services at PSH could benefit countless others and enhance the reputation of Fiji as a health-focused travel destination, ultimately improving quality of life for its citizens and drawing opportunities for international patients seeking affordable medical care.
