The Fiji men’s hockey team celebrated a significant achievement as their captain, Leevan Dutta, marked his 50th international cap while leading his team to victory in the Intercontinental Cup held at the National Hockey Centre in Suva. The team triumphed over the Solomon Islands with a score of 6-3 in the gold medal match, showcasing their resilience and teamwork. Vanuatu secured the bronze by overcoming Samoa 4-3.
Dutta, who began his hockey journey at 15, expressed satisfaction with the win despite some early-game complacency. “We found our rhythm in the second half and were able to take the win,” he stated. He acknowledged the Fiji Hockey Federation’s efforts in organizing the Pacific Cup, emphasizing the importance of financial support for traveling players. Dutta also praised the contributions of debut players Kirk Corrie, Dale Johanssen, and George Ravatu, noting their solid performance on the field.
In a parallel success, the Fiji women’s hockey team finished their Oceania Pacific Cup tournament on a high note by remaining unbeaten. They claimed the Intercontinental Cup title after defeating Samoa decisively, 8-2, and won the Pacific Cup by edging out New Zealand Pasifika in a tense shootout.
Both Dutta and the women’s team’s top scorer, Melba Nautu, excelled during the tournament, with Dutta netting 19 goals and Nautu contributing 13.
This remarkable feat not only highlights the growing talent in Fiji’s hockey scene but also serves as inspiration for younger athletes to pursue their sporting dreams. Families, friends, and supporters are celebrating these victories, which come at a time of increased focus on the importance of sports as a means of unity and pride for the nation.
Overall, the Fiji hockey teams’ performances during the tournament signify a bright future for the sport in the region and a testament to the hard work and dedication of all players involved.
