The Fiji men’s hockey team captain, Leevan Dutta, achieved a significant milestone by earning his 50th international cap during the Intercontinental Cup held at the National Hockey Centre in Suva. The team celebrated their victory by defeating the Solomon Islands 6-3 in the gold medal match, while Vanuatu secured the bronze by overcoming Samoa 4-3.
At 32 years old, Dutta, who began playing hockey at 15, expressed a sense of accomplishment despite acknowledging some early-game complacency. “In the second half, we found our rhythm, and eventually, we were able to take the win,” he stated. He also extended gratitude to the Fiji Hockey Federation for facilitating the tournament, emphasizing the financial strains it places on players.
Dutta praised the impressive performances of debutants Kirk Corrie, Dale Johanssen, and George Ravatu, highlighting their contributions and indicating their potential within the team. He noted the importance of exposing more players to high-level competition via the Warriors team program, which benefits the sport’s growth in the region.
In a heartwarming gesture, Dutta dedicated the win to the sacrifices made by family, friends, and teammates, acknowledging their support with, “all glory to God.”
In related news, the Fiji women’s hockey team continued their winning streak by also lifting the Pacific Cup. They triumphed in the Intercontinental Cup against Samoa, winning 8-2, and defeated New Zealand Pasifika in a nail-biting shootout after a 2-all draw at the end of regular time.
Dutta and Melba Nautu were standout players in their respective tournaments, with Dutta leading the men’s category with 19 goals and Nautu achieving 13 goals for the women.
This dual victory for both Fiji teams underscores the country’s growing prowess in hockey, creating a sense of hope and enthusiasm for the sport’s future in Fiji. With dedicated players and strong support from the community, it appears the best is yet to come for Fijian hockey athletes.
