The Fiji men’s hockey team captain, Leevan Dutta, achieved a significant milestone by earning his 50th international cap as the team secured the Intercontinental Cup title at the National Hockey Centre in Suva. Dutta and his teammates celebrated a 6-3 victory over the Solomon Islands in the gold medal match, while Vanuatu claimed bronze by defeating Samoa 4-3.

Dutta, who began his hockey journey at the age of 15, reflected on the team’s performance, acknowledging a slow start but expressing satisfaction with their ability to find rhythm in the second half. He recognized the importance of the Fiji Hockey Federation in organizing the Pacific Cup, especially since travel costs posed challenges for athletes.

The captain also praised the debut performance of new players Kirk Corrie, Dale Johanssen, and George Ravatu, stating their contributions were vital to the team’s success. Dutta dedicated the win to his family, friends, and teammates, emphasizing the sacrifices made by the players and their shared faith.

In a remarkable showcase of talent, the Fiji women’s hockey team maintained an unbeaten streak throughout the Oceania Pacific Cup tournament, winning both the Intercontinental and Pacific Cup titles. They triumphed over Samoa with a score of 8-2 to lift the Intercontinental Cup and defeated New Zealand Pasifika in a tense shootout after a 2-all tie in regulation time.

Although the men’s team fell short in the Pacific Cup final against NZ Fiji after a 6-all draw that went to a shootout, Dutta and Melba Nautu stood out as top scorers with Dutta netting 19 goals and Nautu contributing 13 over the four-day tournament.

This event highlights the growing talent and competitive spirit of Fiji’s hockey teams, showcasing their capacity for success on an international scale. The dedication and progress displayed by both teams offer a hopeful outlook for the future of hockey in Fiji.
