The Fiji men’s hockey team captain, Leevan Dutta, marked a significant milestone by earning his 50th international cap as his team triumphed in the Intercontinental Cup at the National Hockey Centre in Suva. The team secured a convincing 6-3 victory over the Solomon Islands in the gold medal match, while Vanuatu clinched the bronze by defeating Samoa 4-3.

At 32 years old, Dutta, who started his hockey journey at the age of 15, expressed satisfaction with the win, despite the team’s initial struggles to find their rhythm. He noted, “I think we were a bit complacent in the beginning, but in the second half we found our rhythm and eventually we were able to take the win.” Dutta acknowledged the efforts of the Fiji Hockey Federation for organizing the Pacific Cup, highlighting the challenges players face with travel costs and the positive impact on the sport.

Dutta also praised the debut performances of new players Kirk Corrie, Dale Johanssen, and George Ravatu, stating that they demonstrated their capability and importance to the team. He emphasized the significance of having the Warriors team, which provided more players with opportunities at competitive levels.

He dedicated the victory to their families, friends, and teammates, acknowledging the sacrifices made by the players. “The boys gave up a lot of their time, and as always, all glory to God,” he stated.

The Fiji women’s hockey team also celebrated success, remaining undefeated throughout the Oceania Pacific Cup. They secured the Intercontinental Cup by defeating Samoa 8-2 and triumphed in a tense shootout against New Zealand Pasifika, winning 2-0 after a 2-all tie at full-time. Vanuatu settled for a bronze, losing to Tonga in a shootout.

Dutta and Melba Nautu both excelled as top scorers for their respective teams, with Dutta netting 19 goals and Nautu scoring 13 during the four-day tournament.

This victory not only highlights the talent emerging in Fijian hockey but also shows a promising future for the sport in the region. Both teams’ performances serve as inspirations for young athletes in Fiji and set a solid foundation for further successes on the international stage.
