The trial involving former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem and former Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is ongoing at the Suva High Court. Financial Controller of the Fijian Elections Office, Romika Sewak, testified as a prosecution witness, shedding light on the case. Saneem is accused of receiving a corrupt benefit, while Sayed-Khaiyum faces charges of abuse of office.

During her testimony, Sewak mentioned that Saneem frequently raised complaints regarding the amount of tax being deducted from his salary, even going as far as calling her into the office over a weekend to discuss this. The tax deductions were related to a backdated salary adjustment to 2021, handled outside the usual pay schedule. Saneem reportedly asked Sewak to return the first Deed of Variation (DOV) after the processing of his back pay began, a request Sewak found unusual, prompting her to make a copy for safekeeping.

Sewak also highlighted that in 2021, Saneem’s salary experienced a 10% deduction as part of broader COVID-19 pay adjustments impacting all Permanent Secretaries. This marks the first time she had overseen back pay spanning one and a half years. She raised her concerns with Manager Corporate Services Sanjeshwar Ram when directed to execute a second DOV but noted that Saneem was adamant about proceeding with the payment.

These revelations come amid broader claims against Sayed-Khaiyum, accused of signing a Deed of Variation during his time as Acting Prime Minister, allowing the government to cover more than $50,000 in taxes for Saneem without necessary authorizations. The case has brought attention to government procedures and the emphasis on transparency and accountability within public office.

As the trial continues, it underscores the significant role of the judiciary in examining alleged misconduct and promoting ethical governance, with potential long-term implications for public confidence in electoral processes in Fiji. The trial adds to ongoing discussions about governance practices, and its outcomes may lead to enhanced scrutiny and policy reforms to reinforce ethical conduct and public trust.
