The Suva High Court has informed Dr. Neil Sharma’s legal team that it will not yet make a decision regarding their objections concerning the admissibility of procurement reports in his ongoing trial. Last week, Sharma’s attorney, Wylie Clarke, raised these objections as part of the proceedings that involve Sharma along with former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Justice Usaia Ratuvili explained that the application to dismiss the procurement reports was unusual and emphasized that the court would not overlook this issue at this point in the trial. He noted that a thorough assessment of all evidence would take place, typically after all witnesses have provided their testimonies. This comprehensive evaluation will determine the significance of each document presented.

Furthermore, Justice Ratuvili assured Dr. Sharma that he has the opportunity to renew his challenge at a more suitable time during the trial. The proceedings are currently underway, with the first witness already taking the stand. This high-profile trial deals with serious allegations, including abuse of office, breach of trust, and obstruction of justice.

As the trial progresses, it is expected to shed light on the complexities of governance and accountability in Fiji’s political landscape, allowing for a deeper understanding of the legal frameworks at play. The proceeding also underscores the importance of due process in the judicial system, providing an avenue for the parties involved to present their cases comprehensively.
