The High Court of Fiji has delivered a verdict convicting a 14-year-old boy for two counts of rape against his younger sister, who was just 12 at the time of the offenses. The tragic incidents took place on March 21, 2025, in their one-room family hut located in Newtown, during a period when their mother was not at home.
The victim, feeling frightened due to threats from her brother, initially hesitated to report the abuse. However, once he left to play outside, she bravely confided in their mother, recounting the distressing events in detail. Justice Daniel Goundar noted that the family’s challenges did not provide a sufficient explanation for such serious and specific allegations.
The verdict was finalized on January 23, 2026, with the minor now awaiting sentencing. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding child safety and the importance of removing barriers that prevent victims from speaking out against abuse. The court’s commitment to addressing these issues aims to support vulnerable individuals and promote a safer environment for children in Fiji.
