Weather Alert: Don’t Forget Your Umbrellas!
Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi at 10:03pm on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
Hold onto your hats, folks! A HEAVY RAIN ALERT is still in effect for our friends in the Northern Division, and it’s now crashing the party in Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, along with Tavua and Ra-Rakiraki. On the brighter side, the previously heavy rain alert for Lau and Lomaiviti groups has been cancelled because, let’s face it, Mother Nature gets tired too!
What’s happening? A somewhat grumpy trough of low pressure continues to hang over the northern parts of the group, showering us with clouds and rain as if it were a confetti party gone wild. Meanwhile, we’re enjoying a sip of moist north to northwest wind flow—perfect for some dramatic hair vibes!
Forecasting for midnight tomorrow: Expect to see occasional rain—heavy at times—mixed with a few thunderstorms over Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Yasawa, Mamanuca groups, Tavua, and Ra-Rakiraki. That’s right, it’s the wet and wild version of “Whack-a-Mole”! Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, and their surrounding areas will be slathered in occasional showers, while the rest of us bask in fine weather—except for those cheeky afternoon or evening showers.
Isolated thunderstorms with heavy downpours might feel like they’re training for a water Olympics, potentially leading to flash flooding in low-lying areas, small rivers, and streams. So, if you’re planning on wading, hold onto your floaties!
As for the sea, moderate to rough conditions are expected, so don’t forget to hold onto your boat (or flip flop) as we sail into Monday.
Looking ahead:
– For Navua / Suva / Nausori: Expect fine weather apart from a few dramatic afternoon showers and isolated thunderstorm appearances. Min: 24, Max: 31.
– For Sigatoka / Coral Coast: Occasional showers over Sigatoka, while other areas enjoy fine weather—well, until those cheeky afternoon showers return! Min: 23, Max: 30.
– For Nadi / Lautoka / Ba: Soggy surprises await with occasional showers. Min: 23, Max: 30.
– For Tavua and Rakiraki: Heavy rain might feel like a monsoon party with the occasional thunderclap. Min: 24, Max: 30.
– For Labasa and Savusavu: Prepare for occasional rain and thunderclaps that may scare the socks off your feet! Min: 24, Max: 29, possibly rising as high as “31–can you believe it?!”
– For the Yasawa/Mamanuca group: Heavy rain and thunderstorms are ready to debut. Min: 24, Max: 30.
And finally, for the islanders in Rotuma—keep your raincoats handy as that trough of low pressure continues to shower down! Occasional rain, heavy at times—don’t put your umbrellas away just yet!
Keep smiling, stay dry, and may your rubber boots always be nearby!
