Fiji Health Transformation Summit 2025 Aims to Rebuild Trust and Expand Equitable Care

President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu opened the Fiji Health Transformation Summit 2025 by underscoring the critical need to restore public trust in the nation’s healthcare system. Speaking at the summit, he emphasized that the event comes at a pivotal moment for Fiji, as the health sector must adapt to the demands of a growing and evolving population.

Ratu Naiqama acknowledged the hard work and achievements of healthcare professionals but stressed that the system must be “fit for purpose.” He called for a health infrastructure that prevents avoidable deaths, ensures safe childbirth, safeguards families from financial burdens, and serves all citizens equitably.

Addressing the human cost behind alarming health statistics, Ratu Naiqama pointed out the burden of non-communicable diseases, the pressures facing young people, and the increasing needs of the elderly population. He insisted on the importance of equitable access to healthcare services for all Fijians, saying, “Behind every statistic is a mother, a father, a child, a neighbor. These are our people.”

The President further stated that genuine transformation of the healthcare system will necessitate compassion, enhanced digital systems, improved legislative frameworks, and transparent governance. He urged summit delegates to approach decision-making with unity and courage, always considering the profound impact their choices will have on families.

In a bid to ensure ongoing accountability and transparent reporting, Ratu Naiqama proposed an annual co-hosting of the health summit by the Asian Development Bank alongside the Ministry of Health. This initiative could bolster collaboration and sustainability in Fiji’s healthcare improvement efforts, paving the way for a healthier future for all citizens.
