A 50-year-old man has faced charges from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for allegedly obtaining a financial advantage. The accused, Samuela Tuibeqa, who previously worked at the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, appeared before the Suva Magistrates Court on Friday.
The charges stem from claims made by Tuibeqa between August 1, 2019, and December 31, 2019. It is alleged that he improperly claimed overtime, meal allowances, and other financial benefits amounting to $7,355.86 while he was employed at the Ministry.
During the court proceedings, FICAC Junior State Counsel Sameea Nisa informed Resident Magistrate Yogesh Prasad that the initial phase of disclosures had been provided to Tuibeqa. Furthermore, two sureties were presented in court to support Tuibeqa.
While the prosecution did not oppose bail for Tuibeqa, they requested that strict conditions be imposed. Consequently, Magistrate Prasad issued a Stop Departure Order against him, effective immediately. Tuibeqa is therefore prohibited from leaving the country and has been ordered to avoid any further offenses or interference with prosecution witnesses. He must remain at his current residence, notify the court of any address changes, and report monthly to FICAC Headquarters in Suva.
Tuibeqa has also been instructed to seek Legal Aid assistance and have legal representation by his next court appearance. The next mention of the matter is scheduled for December 13.
This case underscores the commitment to integrity in public service and the importance of accountability in government positions. It serves as a reminder that financial misconduct will not be tolerated and that individuals in positions of trust are expected to adhere to ethical standards.
